Standard Single
Standard Matts are a range of, Ortho designed and built for those who simply prefer more support, Comfort value meets versatility.
A single mattress is just as important as a double!
Whether you’re shopping for an adult or a child, the kind of mattress you buy has a huge effect on sleep. And given the effect the quality of sleep has on everyday wellbeing – and a child’s growing body – it’s important to get it right.
So a few hints about standard single mattresses – that is, mattresses 90cm wide x 190cm long that come into the every day rather than the luxury sector.
Mattress Filling
bonnell spring – classic
This is your traditional mattress with everyday springs.
See our Tulip, Hyacinth, and Poppy mattresses.
Especially for children, also see our Blyton and Lewis mattresses.
Both Blyton and Lewis also come in our Shorty length – just 175cm. Perfect for a young child’s bed where space is tight.
Bonnell Spring – Ortho
Orthopaedic beds are firmer than traditional beds. Sometimes they use firmer upholstery to achieve this, others use bonnell springs at a different gauge, usually 12.5 gauge.
See our Violet, Aster, Magnolia and Honeysuckle beds.
Ortho qualities can also be found in pocket spring and patented spring system beds – check out Luxury Single Mattresses.

Base
Is your single mattress going to be used on a divan or a bedstead frame? Here are things to consider.
Divan
The divan base on which the mattress rests has a significant effect on comfort.
There are two kinds; platform top and sprung edge. While platform tops are sometimes favoured by those who like a firmer bed, sprung edge bases are usually regarded as superior, as they work better with the mattress and help prolong its life.
Bedstead
Your single mattress is ideally suited to a sprung or wooden slatted base.
The wider the slats, and the closer together they are, the better, as these two qualities affect support. Obviously the sturdier the slat, the longer the bed will last.
Sprung slatted is best of all as this will complement the mattress to the optimum.
However, mesh bases are fine for a young child’s bed.
Furniture Expressions’ themed children’s bedsteads, bunk beds and visitor beds might also be just what you’re looking for. They all take a single standard mattress. Check them out under Children’s Beds.
Storage
Drawers
With Furniture Expressions, even our standard single divan bases provide two drawers as an option. We’re sure you’ll find these very handy.
Slidestore
On our special children’s beds, Blyton and Lewis, a slidestore is a further option. This is a sliding door set into the divan base which gives access to useful storage space. Convenient and easy, slidestores are great places to store toys.
Our Captain’s bed also has built in storage as well as a visitor bed. (See Children’s Beds)
Bedsteads
Most bedsteads don’t have inbuilt drawers, but allow for storage underneath. As an optional extra, our Stowe and Levens bedsteads have matching drawers that slide under the bed to look as though they’re part of the frame – smart and useful.
Ottoman
Ottoman style storage is very popular these days, and useful when you don’t have much space at the side of the bed for pulling drawers fully out. An ottoman is where the whole top of the bed lifts up, usually with an easy, spring-loaded motion, and you access your storage from above.
See our Violet, Aster and Hyacinth beds for an ottoman in the single size.
Remember, sleep matters!! It affects how you feel during the day. Buying a mattress is an important decision affecting your wellbeing for years and years. Choose wisely.
