Ottoman Beds
Ottoman beds are the most fabulous beds around for storage, and while the double beds especially aren’t cheap, they have big advantages over divans with drawers, or bedsteads. Ottoman beds have become the gold standard for single and double beds with storage.
They also offer good value; while they might not be cheap our double ottoman beds in particular give you amazing storage space. And while in the past if you needed storage space, you might have had to actually opt for a smaller, cheaper double bed so you could properly open the drawers, with an ottoman you can choose the biggest bed available to fit in your space – just what we recommend for sleeping comfort, the most important thing of all.
For more information see our Bed Guide.
So what exactly is an ottoman bed? This is where the mattress and the top of the bed’s base lift up to reveal a hollow inside, purpose designed for storage. As mentioned, it’s very handy for rooms which don’t have the space around the bed to allow you to properly open divan drawers.
It’s also great for people who have trouble bending; hauling spare quilts or throws out of ground level drawers while crouching isn’t always easy! What is easy, with an ottoman bed, is the lifting action – it’s usually hydraulically assisted, a bit like power steering in cars, so it’s not too heavy. Most adults will be able to lift the ‘lid’ of an ottoman bed with one hand, it’s so light and easy to manage.
What to look out for with an ottoman bed? Please don’t be tempted to buy a cheap, sub-standard ottoman bed, whether it’s double or single: always ensure the bottom of the ottoman has a proper base. If you do buy an exceptionally cheap double bed in the ottoman style, the chances are it won’t have a base. As a result, all the stuff you store will get horribly dusty; it’s almost like putting them under an open bedstead.
So buying a cheap double ottoman bed is pretty much a waste of time if you’re looking to store things like bedcovers, duvets and pillows, they’ll be so grimy you won’t want to use them. Instead, we do recommend you go for a good ottoman bed, with a proper base, like the ones we sell at Furniture Expressions.

Widths and Lengths
All our ottoman beds come in various sizes, from single, to small double, to standard double to kingsize. The expert thinking on beds as advocated by the National Bed Federation is to buy the biggest you possibly can. The more room you have to move around while you sleep, the more comfortable you will feel and the better quality sleep you will enjoy. You’ll see the results of that next morning! This applies whether the bed is for a single sleeper or for two. For two people looking at a double ottoman bed, if they have the space and can afford a little extra they should consider a king size bed 5’/150cm wide.
We also have double ottoman beds available in an alternative width, 4’/120cm. This would be a good choice especially for sleepers who need maximum storage, but who wouldn’t have the space to fully open the divan drawers on a standard double bed. This in between size is also cheaper than a standard double bed of course. For taller people, the important thing is obviously the length. This is always 190cm/6’3” for double ottoman beds, but increases to 200cm/6’6” for king size (5’150cm).
Ottoman beds, made in the UK, are one of the best bed options you can buy if you’re looking for storage. Instead of providing the usual drawers, these divan beds open from the top, revealing a large cavity within the bed base. This cavity has the advantage of being very large, deeper than most drawers, so an ottoman bed will take a lot of stuff, and of course it’s very easy to access. Ottoman beds made in the UK are a fabulous way of getting a good night’s sleep on a comfortable bed while knowing you have somewhere to keep your stuff!
We mention ottoman beds made in the UK because of how important this is to many of you, to know the bed you will be buying is made here in England. This supports the local economy and keeps British people in work. It’s also a guarantee of craftsmanship and a quality product, and it means we have your ottoman bed here ready to deliver to you fast anywhere in the UK!
Ottoman beds make an exceptional choice for those looking for that certain extra something – first, there is the comfort you find with any UK-made divan from Furniture Expressions. Then, there is access to the storage area. Many people find it much easier to simply lift up the top of the bed – the mattress and the base it rests on – with the aid of the easy, spring-loaded action, than it is to kneel on the floor and pull out drawers. Your things are all presented on view at once – no scrabbling around at the back of a drawer which you can’t properly see – and all you have to do is choose what you want and lift it out. Easy. Putting the ottoman bed back down is a cinch too: a firm press and it’s in place, with all the bedding undisturbed. Sometimes people think you need to take the quilt and the sheets of the bed to use an ottoman: not true! Any cushions, or a throw draped loosely across the top, might slide around, but that’s all. The rest of your bedding stays put.
It’s also important to say that an ottoman bed should have a proper base, a floor if you like to the storage cavity – any bed which we supply automatically has this, as do most ottoman beds made in the UK. It’s something to watch out for though, as cheaper ottoman beds sometimes don’t have this important base. Your things will get extremely dusty without it, so it’s not to be recommended.
The other great thing about an ottoman bed is that you can have a big bed in a small room, yet still be able to access your things – this is really important when a lot of new houses in the UK are being built with ever-smaller bedrooms. The National Bed Federation advises that people should buy the biggest bed they can for the most comfortable, beneficial sleep. In the past, that’s not always been possible, as people need the storage provided by a divan, so they’ve had to allow space to fully open the drawers. Now, with our UK-made ottoman beds, you can buy as big a bed as will fit in your bedroom and still be able to access your storage: perfect.
