Visitor beds are as popular as kids’ bunk beds, with their pull-out mattresses. They too save on space, and of course they don’t have the height you find with children’s bunk beds. In an under-eaves room with a sloping ceiling, that’s important. Some visitors’ beds like Frisby and Beatrix have extendable legs which lift them to the same height as the main bed; others, like Jumanji, don’t, so do check the model of your choice. Many children enjoy the experience of being close to the floor in a visitor bed – it feels a little like camping – so for the kids either kind is great!
Whether you choose children’s bunk beds or visitor beds, you’ll need a couple of mattresses for them. Always make sure of the size of mattress a new bed takes, as kids’ bunk beds and especially the visitor beds don’t always take the standard 3’/90 x 190cm size. In some models, although none that we currently sell, the visitor element of a visitor bed will take a smaller mattress. Our metal bunk beds including new high sleeper Lion also take the standard mattress, but it is just as well to check. Here at Furniture Expressions we have in any case a full range of mattress sizes including the smaller 75cm/2’6” width. Some of our small width mattresses even come in a Shorty length, that is just 175cm instead of the standard 190cm.
With Furniture Expressions, those mattresses are just what you need for children’s bunk beds and visitor beds as they’re patterned to suit a child’s taste. Have a look at our Blyton and Lewis mattresses, designed especially for children’s beds and looking great on the open-style metal bunk beds. As they come in the Shorty 175cm length and small 75cm/2’6” width, these mattresses are perfect for some kids’ bunk beds and visitor beds, although as already mentioned at Furniture Expressions we keep it simple; all our children’s bunk beds, high sleeper and visitor beds take standard single size mattresses (3’, ie 90 x 190cm).
What’s most important, though, is that they give good support. All Furniture Expressions mattresses, whether they’re designed for kids’ bunk beds, visitor beds or any other kind, are all good quality ones with 13.5 gauge springs and plenty of fillings to provide growing children with the support their bodies need.
So what kind of children’s bunk bed had you in mind? There are several options; we have metal bunk beds and wooden bunk beds too. Metal bunk bed Wizard and wooden bunk bed Winnie are extremely versatile as both models actually split into two separate single beds, so if siblings eventually want a room of their own, or for example move into an attic room with low ceilings but plenty of floor-space, these metal and wooden bunk beds can accommodate your changing circumstances. That’s a very useful extra in kids’ bunk beds, and one it’s easy to overlook.
You might also consider buying children’s bunk beds even when there’s only one child. This gives the child the option of sleeping in the top or bottom bunk, as they prefer, while the other bunk becomes a very handy area for storing spare quilts, pillows, cushions and throws – even clothes. With metal bunk beds, where the lower bunk is more visible, you might want to use the upper book for storage – although spreading a large throw over everything helps to keep the look neat and tidy, another plus for children’s bunk beds.
The other major issue to consider when buying kids’ bunk beds is the position of the ladder. With many children’s bunk beds, you need to make sure of course that if it is to go against a wall, the ladder will be at the near side, with easy access. However, with our Wizard metal bunk bed, the ladder will fit to either side for full flexibility. It usually doesn’t matter too much which end of the upper bunk the ladder gives onto as the child can sleep with his or her head towards either end; most kids’ bunk beds, at least the metal bunk beds, have uniform ends to allow for this. Our high sleeper, Lion, has a different kind of ladder; although it’s fixed to one side the ladder is set at an angle for easy climbing, and it has flat steps rather than rungs which are kinder on bare feet. All in all, children’s bunk beds are a great idea with benefits for everyone!
Double the fun with these great bunk and visitor beds.
