Widths and Lengths
All our divan beds come in various sizes, from single and standard double to superking, and the expert thinking on beds as advocated by the National Bed Federation is to buy the biggest you possibly can. The more room you have to move around while you sleep, the more comfortable you will feel and the better quality sleep you will enjoy. You’ll see the results of that next morning! This applies whether the bed is for a single sleeper or for two. For two people looking at a double divan bed, if they have the space and can afford a little extra they should consider at least a king size bed 5’/150cm wide, or even a superking 6’/180cm. We also have double divan beds available in alternative widths, often used on the continent, 4’/120cm and 5’3”/160cm. For taller people, the important thing is the length. This is always 190cm/6’3” for double divan beds, but increases to 200cm/6’6” from king size (5’150cm) onwards. This includes superking.

Why choose a divan bed?
A divan is acknowledged as the most comfortable kind of bed currently produced. Comprising a base with a mattress, the two are designed to work together. This is the case whatever the size of divan bed, double or single. We always recommend putting a new mattress with a new base, and vice-versa, and best of all is buying them both together as a divan set, where the two are specially built to partner one another. This is because the fillings in the mattress will echo the fillings in the base, for a properly compatible feel, as well as the consideration of matching looks. A divan bed does look pleasingly smart, and these days the finish on the mattress top can also be echoed on the base for extra elegance.
Apart from comfort, the other major reason for choosing a divan bed is storage. Even in single beds, you can have a drawer at either side; very useful. In double divan beds, you have the option of a two drawer set, where there is one drawer at either side; a four drawer set, with two at either side; and a continental 2+2 drawer set, where the second of the two drawers on both sides is shorter. This is to allow space for a bedside table – you don’t need to move your furniture out of the way to access the drawer. Cunning, eh?
Divan beds these days are being built with an extra storage option – the ottoman. This is where the mattress and the top of the base lift up to reveal a hollow inside for storage. It’s very handy for rooms without space around the bed to properly open the drawers, or of course for people who have trouble bending. The action is usually assisted and is light and easy to manage. Always ensure the bottom of the ottoman has a proper base, or the stuff you store will get very dusty. All ottoman divan beds, double or single, sold by Furniture Expressions have a proper base.
Fillings
The feel of a bed is mostly based on the filling; for example springs, foam and upholstery components. Just as there is a wide variety of divan beds out there, people themselves vary enormously in what kind of mattress filling suits them. For example some will like an ortho bed, using a firmer spring and firmer fillings. Others will prefer memory foam. Yet others will go for a pocket spring bed, where the springs, while usually being packed tightly together, are held in place with a light fabric structure resembling a honeycomb. For more details, and to assess what kind of filling will most suit you, please see our Tips.
We also recommend you see our Tips page for details about the divan base, and the mattress cover – also important in the overall feel of a divan bed. Whether double or single, kingsize or superkingsize, a divan bed can make a big difference in the quality of sleep you enjoy. And with these fabulous choices from Furniture Expressions, what’s stopping you ordering your single or double divan bed today!
