What is a bed frame?
Bed frames are beds that provide a supportive platform to a mattress. The base of single and double size bed frame is usually made of metal or wood. Metal can either come in the form of a mesh, recommended for lighter people such as children, or for occasional use; or slats. Wooden bases can either be a solid platform, as in a theme bed for children, or again as slats. Traditional wooden slats are found on quality double bed frames, even those with a metal or leather-look frame, and the very best quality are sprung. Metal slats are found on the single sizes only of our metal bed frames.
Looking at slatted bases, the gap between them is important: you need the slats fairly close together to support a large, heavy mattress. Wide slats are also helpful in this. If the bed frame is described as sprung slatted, this is the very best, as it complements the way your mattress works.
what about storage?
Bed frames rarely have built-in storage, although they do provide lots of space beneath for storing things in your own boxes or bags. However, at Furniture Expressions, we have several double bed frames (currently only in wood, not metal or leather-look) with built-in drawers or with matching under-bed drawers as an optional extra. For a bedstead with built-in storage, Blackthorn has two useful end drawers. It comes in double and king size. Cherry (a white bed) has matching under-bed drawers as an optional extra which slide on castors beneath the bedstead.
widths and lengths
All our bed frames, wooden, metal and leather, come in various sizes, from single and standard double to superking. For taller people, the important thing is the length. This is always 190cm/6’3” for double bed frames, but increases to 200cm/6’6” for king size (5’/150cm). The expert thinking on beds as advocated by the National Bed Federation is to buy the biggest you possibly can. The more room you have to move around while you sleep, the more comfortable you will feel and the better quality sleep you will enjoy. You’ll see the results of that next morning! This applies whether the bed is for a single sleeper or for two. For two people looking at a double bed frame, in any finish including metal, if they have the space and can afford a little extra they should consider a king size bed frame 5’/150cm wide. We also have several double bed frames in metal, leather-look and wood, available in an alternative width (4’/120cm size). These models are the Birch in metal, the Bark in leather-look and the Cherry and Pear in wood. There aren’t very many bed frames of this size in the marketplace, and it is a very useful choice, both for a single sleeper who sensibly wants something a little bigger than a standard single but doesn’t want to go to the expense of a standard double, or for a slimline couple who don’t have space for standard double bed frame! Whatever your choice, you’re sure to love the bed frames we present for your delight at Furniture Expressions.
