A small single mattress is usually bought for a small child’s bed. It’s just as important that children have good support and maximum comfort as an adult – arguably, more so, as sleep is vital to a growing child.
So it also pays to consider the different types when you’re buying a small mattress.
Most Furniture Expressions mattresses are available in 75cm (2’6”) size.
You might particularly want to look at our children’s divans, Blyton and Lewis, which not only come in the 75cm width but also our special Shorty length – 175cm – to accommodate a young child and fit easily where space is tight.
Otherwise, all small single mattresses are 75cm wide x 190cm long.
Mattress filling
The mattress is the most important part of the bed and directly affects comfort and wellbeing.
bonnell spring – classic
Your traditional mattress with everyday springs.

bonnell spring – ortho
Orthopaedic beds are firmer than traditional beds. Sometimes they use firmer upholstery to achieve this, others use bonnell springs at a different gauge, usually 12.5 gauge. Ortho qualities can also be found in pocket spring and patented spring system beds.

pocket spring
The springs are each contained within their own individual fabric pocket. This pocket system is hailed as particularly comfortable, as the springs follow the movement of the sleeper. The number of pocket springs in a mattress can vary; the higher the spring count, the greater support and comfort.

exclusive spring system
While these beds are promoted primarily at adults, the extra comfort they confer can give a child a very good night’s sleep too, so they’re just as good in a small single mattress.

divan base
The divan base on which the mattress rests has a significant effect on comfort.
There are two kinds; platform top and sprung edge. Platform tops give a firmer feel, while sprung edge bases work best with the mattress and help prolong its life.
Storage
drawers
With Furniture Expressions, even our small single divan bases provide two drawers as an option. We’re sure you’ll find these very handy.
slidestore
On our special children’s beds, Blyton and Lewis, a slidestore is a further option. This is a sliding door set into the divan base which gives access to useful storage space. Convenient and easy, slidestores are great places to store toys.
Remember, sleep matters!! It affects how you feel during the day. Buying a mattress is an important decision affecting your wellbeing for years and years. Choose wisely.
